City Infrastructure Projects

The following information highlights City infrastructure projects, which are primarily managed by the Public Works and Transportation departments. Below you will find highlighted major projects that have long-term, significant public impact.

Crosstown Connector Project

The City has initiated Phase II of a multi-phase water system maintenance project to replace valve components on the water transmission main that connects the Ten-Mile Water Treatment Plant to the City of Helena’s reservoirs. Phase II of the Crosstown Connector Valve Replacement Project will include work at 13 locations on the west side of Helena between Woolston Reservoir and Malben Reservoir. The project will require limiting the water supply from the Ten Mile Water Treatment Plant and supplementing with water from the Missouri River Treatment Plant until the construction is complete. Whenever the Missouri River plant is turned on, it is common that some residents experience slight discoloration or odor in their water. The changes should not be of concern and are typically resolved quickly.

The project has been planned to minimize disruptions to the public; however residents may encounter temporary street closures and traffic control measures, and some properties may require temporary water service to be piped in from elsewhere in the system. City staff and the contractor team will be in contact with any property owners impacted by the work.

The project will be completed in four phases: Phase 1 (completed Fall 2025), Phase 2 & 3 (tentatively scheduled for Fall 2026), and Phase 4 (tentatively scheduled for Spring 2027). The project is funded by the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund.

Street and Trail Project Notices

5th Ave. Valley Gutter Project - Sept. 6-15

The City Transportation Systems Department will close 5th St. at the intersection of N. Lamborn St. on Sunday, Sept. 6, for installation of a new valley gutter. The intersection is expected to remain closed through September 15, while new concrete cures.

Helena Ave. Valley Gutter Project – Aug. 17-25

The City Streets team will close the southeast side of the intersection of Helena Ave. and Logan St. for the installation of a new valley gutter beginning Monday, Aug. 17. That side of the intersection will remain closed until Aug. 25 to allow the concrete to cure.

Rodney Street Asphalt Overlay – Aug. 19-20 & 25-26

The City Streets team will close S. Rodney St. from E. Broadway south to the end of the asphalt near Division St. for asphalt patching on Aug. 19-20 & 25-26 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

N. Lamborn Street Asphalt Maintenance Scheduled Aug. 11–13 & 18

The City Streets team will close N. Lamborn St. from 11th Ave. to E. Broadway St. for asphalt maintenance on Aug. 11–13 & 18 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

S. Rodney Street Asphalt Patching – Aug. 6

The City Streets team will close S. Rodney St. from E. Broadway south to the end of the asphalt near Division St. for asphalt patching on Thursday, Aug. 6 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Knight St. Valley Gutter Project - July 16 to Aug. 5

The City Streets team will close a portion of Knight St. between Cleveland St. and Allison St. from July 16-Aug. 5 to replace the valley gutter and allow time for concrete curing.

Fuels Reduction Project Continues in Mt. Ascension Natural Park

Contract crews will begin working in Unit #6 on the east face of Mt. Ascension tomorrow, July 24. Signs alerting trail users to the ongoing forestry operations have been posted on the 2006 Trail, Eddie West Trail, & Goin' EZ. Trail users are encouraged to avoid the area.

Multi-Location Mobile Chip Seal Project – July 21-24

The City Streets team will perform chip seal asphalt repair in several areas around town next Tuesday through Friday, July 21-24.

Multi-Location Asphalt Milling Project – July 13-17

The City Streets team will close portions of California St., N. Lamborn St., S. Rodney St., N. Roberts St. and N. Hannaford St. for milling and paving next week, July 13-17 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Crack Seal Repair on Colonial Drive - July 13-14

On July 13-14, the City Streets team will perform crack and seal asphalt repair on Colonial Dr. from the entrance to Shodair Children's hospital to the edge of the City limits, just beyond Deerfield Ln. The work being completed is a mobile operation. There will be traffic control devices on-site to notify motorists to be aware of work ahead.

Crosstown Connector Project - Phase II

8th Ave. Main Replacement

The City of Helena has contracted with Northwest Landworks LLC to replace a water main along 8th Ave. between N. Hoback Street and Idaho Ave. Temporary water service may be required periodically for affected residents. This project is estimated to take two weeks to complete and will require the temporary closure of 8th Ave.

Lawrence Water & Sewer Main Replacement

The City of Helena has contracted with Northwest Landworks LLC to replace a water main along Lawrence St. between Monroe and Park Ave. and a sewer line on Lawrence between Dearborn and Benton Ave. Temporary water service may be required periodically for affected residents.

West Main/Eureka to Hale Connector

The project consists of replacing an existing water main between
the Eureka Well and the Hale water storage tank with a new 8”
water main between the well and the storage tank. A separate
dedicated 12” water main between the storage tank and the
distribution system on West Main Street. An additional 12” water
main will also connect from West Main to Reeder’s Village.
