The City of Helena's drinking water is received from mountain reservoirs, streams and nearby rivers. Before we can drink and use it, it must be treated. The Water Treatment Division’s goals are to maintain the highest standards for water treatment while choosing a cost effective means to meet future standards. Supply customers with the highest quality potable water possible while keeping the water costs down. Investigate and implement practical and cost effective methods to treat the water looking at new and old technology.
The Water Treatment Division has a variety of duties to perform to acquire, treat and supply water culminating at the consumer's water tap. This requires the Water Treatment Division to work co-operatively with regulatory groups, environmental groups, and the public.
On April 24, the City was able to resume use of water from the Ten Mile Treatment Plant after we completed maintenance and upgrades at the facility. The process of turning the plant on included several weeks of testing with Montana DEQ. We did not expect issues due to the treatment plant coming back online, but some residents are reporting discolored water in their taps. The color is the result of sediment being disturbed in pipes that were unused during the project. The City has sampled the water coming from Ten Mile and it is safe to drink. City staff are flushing fire hydrants to help eliminate the sediment and resolve the color issue as fast as possible. If you run your tap, it may also help flush sediment from the system. We are also exploring a main break that could be contributing to the problem. If you have questions, please call 406-447-8567.
