Q: How do we read the water meters monthly without getting inside your house?

A: The meters are read with a radio read receiver monthly. The reading unit is mounted in a truck. The truck is driven through the city to read all meters. Each meter is identified by a dedicated ID number that relays read information to a host computer.

Q: If I am leaving town for an extended period, is it possible to have my water shut off and my bill stopped?

A: Yes, we can shut off your water at your curb box before you leave town. You can call our office to schedule an appointment. We will then record a final read on the meter. You will not be billed until the water is turned back on. There is a $75 charge for this service. You may also want to drain and blow out your water lines to be sure they are completely emptied of water. Contact your plumber for further information.

Q: How do I locate my curb box?

A: You can call our office at 457-8567 during normal business hours. We have a record of the location of most curb boxes. We can also attempt to locate your curb box on site for you; however, we can not guarantee they can always be located.

Q: How do I get my water shut off at my curb box?

A: You can call our office to schedule an appointment. In most circumstances, we can come locate your curb box and shut it off. We do not provide this service after hours unless it's an emergency situation.

Q: Who is responsible to repair curb boxes?

A: The home owner is responsible to keep the curb box in operable condition.

Q: What part of the water service to my house is my responsibility?

A: The home owner is responsible for the water service from the City water main to the residence. The City owns and maintains the water meters and the water mains.

Q: How do I apply for a Service Line Replacement Program Loan?

A: You may apply for a Service Line Replacement Program Loan for emergency repair to your water or sewer service line by filling out the Service Line Replacement Loan Program Application(PDF, 212KB) and submitting to UMDinfo@helenamt.gov or by mail to 316 N Park Ave, Rm 417, Helena MT 59601.

Q: How do I get my water pressure checked?

A: We can check the water pressure in your house. If you are experiencing problems, or your inside pipes are rattling, it could be that your pressure relief valve is not working properly and needs to be replaced.

Q: Why do I have a sewer gas smell in my house?

A: This is a common occurrence during high winds. If you pour water down your floor drains or traps this should take care of it.

Q: What if I have water backing up inside my house?

A: Call our office at 457-8567. We will come jet the main to be sure our city main is clear before you call a plumber. If after hours, please call the Helena Police Dispatch number at 457-8865 or 911.

Q: How can I find out where my sewer tap is?

A: Call our office at 457-8567 during normal business hours. We can look up your connection point to the main and give you the dimensions.

Q: What if I see someone dumping something down a storm drain?

A: Call our office immediately at 457-8567. If after hours, please leave a detailed message then call the Helena Police Dispatch number at 457-8865.

Q: What if I find a stormdrain that is full of leaves or debris?

A: Please call our office at 457-8567 during normal business hours. We will come and remove the debris so the drain can work properly.
