Public Transit just got more Flexible

Welcome to Capital Transit, the City of Helena’s public transportation system. Capital Transit provides bus service within Helena City limits, as well as a route from East Valley / East Helena to the Transit Center.

Our buses operate within Helena City limits between 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. East Valley/East Helena commuter style route runs 8am - 10am and 2pm - 4pm. The East Valley/East Helena route is closed on all federal holidays.


New Service Model

As of March 14, 2022, Capital Transit began offering a new ride scheduling service model. Within City limits, the new model is known as curb to curb service. 

Limited fixed bus stop locations in East Valley / East Helena will continue to operate. Riders can take Capital Transit from East Valley / East Helena to the Transit Center, then schedule additional destinations within Helena City limits using the App.

Fares

Drivers do not carry change. Please have exact change when purchasing tickets or passes. In addition to paying when you board, passes can be bought in advance at the transit office or on the Capital Transit App.

How to Ride

Capital Transit offers curb-to-curb service within Helena City limits. Download the Capital Transit App to schedule your ride, up to 1 day in advance. Same-day service is subject to availability. If you have a specific time that you need to arrive at your destination, please be sure to schedule your ride the day prior.

The East Valley Bus

The East Valley Bus is a combination service known as a “Deviated Fixed Route” that provides service to established stops and ADA Paratransit Service in the East Valley/East Helena Service Area with set stops at East Helena City Hall, East Helena Library, Apartment Complex Beechnut Street. Hours of operation are 8AM to 10 AM and 2 PM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday, no holidays or weekends. 

FAQs

Do you run on weekends or Holidays?

No – there is no service on the weekends.

Yes – service is provided on certain Holidays:

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Presidents' Day
  • Indigenous Peoples Day
  • Veterans Day

I am confined to a wheel chair can I ride the bus?

Yes – buses are ADA compliant and equipped with a wheel chair lift.

I have a bicycle. Can I put it on the bus?

Bicycles are allowed on buses equipped with a bike carrier. It is the responsibility of the rider to load and unload their bicycle from the bike racks.

Can I bring my animal on the bus?

Only service animals are allowed to ride on the buses as long as they are under the control of their owner. Other animals not meeting the definition of a service animal must be placed in an appropriately designed and constructed animal carrier, boxes are not considered animal carriers in most instances.

I have a baby, are there car seats on the buses?

All children five years old and under must utilize a child safety seat during transport. The customer is responsible for providing and securing the car seat. 

Does the Bus Driver have change?

No, please bring the correct fare amount with you.

Where can I buy bus passes?

Passes can be purchased virtually on our APP, from a bus driver, or at the Capital Transit office located at 1415 North Montana Avenue.

In person purchases: Please call 406-447-8080 Ext. 1 to schedule an appointment to complete an in-person purchase. Also please bring correct amount of change or make checks payable to Capital Transit. Credit cards are accepted for APP purchases only.

Can I eat and drink on the bus?

No – food and drinks are prohibited from the bus.

Do I have to pay for my child or my attendant to ride the bus?

Attendants and children 6 years old or younger ride free.

Title VI Non-Discrimination policy

Capital Transit is committed to ensuring that no person is excluded from participation in, or denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination in the receipt of its services or programs on the basis of race, color or national origin or any other characteristics protected by state or federal law, including: the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended. Further, under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, no entity shall discriminate against an individual with a physical or mental disability in connection with the provision of transportation service. To this end Capital Transit has updated its Title VI program, as required by the Federal Transit Administration, and is available for review.

To obtain more information on the Capital Transit nondiscrimination obligations or to file a Title VI or ADA complaint, contact Nicole Cosby at the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) at 406.444.6334. You have the right to file a complaint of discrimination in writing no later than 180 calendar days after the date of the alleged discrimination. If you are unable to complete a written complaint, please contact MDT for assistance. Mail complaint to: 2701 Prospect Avenue, Helena, MT 59620.

The Helena area TAC is an advisory group that cooperatively assists the local transit operator in assessing and prioritizing local needs.

Key Meetings are:

  • October 3, 2022: Distribution of FY-23 Coordination Plan Sections to applicable entities for review and updates as needed/if any by those that participate in providing transportation services; and reminder for anyone participating they will need to provide language for inclusion in plan for FY-24.
  • November 1, 2022: All sections of Coordination plan that were updated for inclusion in the FY-24 plan are due by 5:00pm, these must be emailed back to Lauren Harms at lharms@helenamt.gov
  • November 22, 2022: Updated FY-24 Coordination Plan will be sent by Lauren Harms to CTAC Chair for review of complied document by the CTAC members.
  • December 6, 2022: CTAC members will meet to adopt FY-24 Coordination Plan
  • December 12, 2022: FY-24 Capital Equipment Requests letters are due back to the CTAC Chair. All request letters must be sent to the CTAC Chair
  • December 16, 2022: CTAC Executive Committee meets to rank submitted FY-24 Capital Equipment requests.
  • January 9, 2023: CTAC minutes for FY-24 Coordination Plan adoption, summary letter of FY-24 Capital Equipment rankings and meeting minutes due to City of Helena, send to Lauren Harms at lharms@helenamt.gov
  • March 1, 2023: Applications due to State of Montana for Operations Grant and Capital Equipment Grant Requests.
