The City is planning to replace the existing 12-inch steel/cast iron water main with a new 12-inch PVC water main in Lawrence Street from Monroe to Park Avenue. The existing water main was installed in 1920 and 1923. This water main has had four breaks since 2017 and has exceeded its design life. The proposed alignment is offset 10-feet north of the existing sewer main to avoid underground utilities and minimize the impact to mature boulevard trees. The existing water main will be excavated and replaced from Monroe Avenue to Harrison Avenue. The main from Harrison Avenue to Park Avenue will be abandoned in place. This project will include replacing 33 water services/curb valves, installing eight gate valves, and replacing four fire hydrants. Temporary water service may be required periodically for affected residents. Ten boulevard trees will be removed and replaced due to water services that conflict with trees.
The City is also planning to replace 268 feet of existing 8-inch clay sewer main between Dearborn and Benton Avenue. This sewer main collects wastewater from 63 single-family homes, 101 rental units, and Hawthorne School. The existing sewer main will be replaced with a new 8-inch diameter PVC sewer main on the same alignment. The City is proposing to replace the manhole at the intersection of Lawrence Street and Benton Avenue due to its age and poor condition. There are 10 sewer services on this main that will be replaced from the main to the boulevard. Bypass pumping will be required during installation of the new sewer main and manhole.
