West Main/Eureka to Hale Connector

About the Project

The project consists of replacing an existing water main between the Eureka Well and the Hale water storage tank with a new 8” water main between the well and the storage tank. A separate dedicated 12” water main between the storage tank and the distribution system on West Main Street. An additional 12” water main will also connect from West Main to Reeder’s Village.

The existing Eureka Well pipe is 130 years old. Updating and replacing the piping will improve the operations, reliability, and resilience of the City’s water supply system. The addition of a dedicated outlet from Hale tank for West Main Street will provide much needed water for fire suppression and provide water service in times of power outage on Main St.

This project will require the temporary closure of the lower section of Carriage Lane, requiring traffic in the Reeder’s Village neighborhood to reroute using Howie St. for ingress and Adams St. for egress. Traffic flow signage will be posted throughout the neighborhood and along the detour route.  Emergency services access will remain available. Staff do not anticipate water service interruptions to homes in the area. Though the Mount Helena Trailhead will remain open during construction, city trail users are encouraged to access Mt. Helena City Park via Dump Gulch, Tubbs, or Le Grand Cannon Trailheads to ease traffic congestion.

TheWest Main/Eureka to Hale project has an anticipated completion timeline of July 2026. The City of Helena has contracted with Mike Coleman Construction, Inc. to complete this project.
