HELENA, Mont. - The City of Helena has begun a citywide assessment of its streets and sidewalks to better understand gaps in ADA compliance. Residents may see a vehicle, branded with a Tectonic logo and with a LiDAR system mounted on top, driving around City streets throughout the day. The assessment is expected to be complete by Oct. 27.

The City contacted with Citian Inc. to perform the LiDAR scan and assessment. The LiDAR technology scans a location and attributes of City right-of-way, such as sidewalks, curb ramps, bike lanes, road striping, and more. The data captured will only include imagery of infrastructure as viewable from the public ROW. The vehicle will follow all posted traffic signs and signals and should not impact traffic.

The measurements and scans collected will be utilized to assess the assets for ADA compliance and to provide the City with a comprehensive inventory of these assets. The City will use this data to identify the areas most in need of repairs and further inform the City’s ADA Transition Plan and future construction programming.

The data collection project schedule is subject to change due to timing of other utility projects, weather, special events, and any unforeseen circumstances.
