HELENA, MT – The City of Helena and Lewis and Clark County are expanding their lithium battery recycling program. This initiative will support sustainability goals and address the pressing issue of lithium battery fires and other associated environmental risks caused by improper disposal of lithium batteries in the Helena Community waste stream.

This year, there has been an increase in fires caused by discarded lithium batteries, impacting City solid waste services and the Lewis and Clark County landfill. These fires have caused substantial damage and threaten employee safety. Since April, fires at the Landfill have resulted in an estimated $18,000 worth of damage.

In response, the City and County have expanded lithium battery recycling capabilities to address the growing concern over lithium battery fires. By partnering with Call2Recycle, the recycling program will significantly increase its capacity to accept more lithium batteries.

Residents are asked to place all lithium battery devices under the large red sign labeled “Lithium Battery Drop-Off”, near the E-Waste section of the Transfer Station recycling area. The goal is to make it easier for residents to recycle their lithium batteries properly.

“By expanding our battery recycling program, we provide residents with an environmentally responsible, convenient and safe diversion options, while also allowing us to accept larger quantities.”  says Pete Anderson, City of Helena’s Solid Waste Superintendent.  “We are committed to protecting our employees, community and environment from the dangers posed by lithium battery fires.”

Officials have reallocated funds from household hazardous waste events to ensure the successful expansion of the program. This proactive approach ensures program implementation, and expansion of the current recycling program, without additional taxpayer burden.
