HELENA, Mont. — The Lewis and Clark Metropolitan Opioid Abatement Region Governance Committee (Governance Committee) is now accepting applications for opioid settlement funding through the Montana Opioid Abatement Trust (MOAT). The grants will support evidence-based programs that reduce opioid-related harm and strengthen prevention, treatment, and recovery efforts for residents of Lewis and Clark County.

"These settlement funds represent an important opportunity to invest in solutions that prevent opioid misuse, expand access to treatment and recovery services, and build stronger systems of care for our community," said Helena Mayor and Governance Committee member Emily Dean.

“The need to address the opioid issues that face our communities cannot be overstated. It is my hope that the work of this committee can be a real catalyst to support the good work being done though local programs and initiatives,” said Lewis & Clark County Commissioner and Governance Committee member Andy Hunthausen.

The committee is seeking proposals for programs that are evidence-based, demonstrate measurable community impact, and build sustainable local capacity. Priority will be given to projects focused on:

  • Prevention Programs that educate school-age children, young adults, and the broader community, strengthen protective factors, and reduce risk factors before substance use begins.
  • Treatment and Recovery Programs that provide evidence-based treatment and long-term recovery support for individuals with opioid use disorder.

Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, local government entities, hospitals and clinics, and school districts serving Lewis and Clark County residents. Preference will be given to organizations located within Lewis and Clark County, although organizations outside the county may apply if their proposed project directly serves county residents.

Grant funding is awarded for one-year projects. Organizations seeking continued support for multi-year initiatives must submit a new application each year. Funding availability varies annually based on opioid settlement distributions. Applications are accepted year-round through the Montana Opioid Abatement Trust grant portal and are reviewed twice each calendar year.

Application Deadlines

  • Spring Grant Cycle: March 1
  • Fall Grant Cycle: September 1

Following committee review, top applicants will be invited to present their proposed projects to the Lewis and Clark Metropolitan Abatement Region Opioid Governance Committee. Funding recommendations will then be forwarded to the Montana Opioid Abatement Trust Advisory Committee, which makes the final award decisions. A list of projects funded to-date is available at https://montanaopioid.org/lewis-and-clark-county-metro-region/.

Organizations interested in applying or learning more about the funding opportunity are encouraged to visit the Lewis and Clark Metro Region Opioid Committee website or contact Elisa Fiaschetti at efiaschetti@lccountymt.gov or 406-457-8856.
