Know the Snow Code

HELENA, Mont. — Winter is almost here, and we all must work together to keep our families and neighbors safe during snowy conditions. Do you know your responsibilities for snow removal?

Here are a few key reminders:

• Every owner of property within the City of Helena fronting on or abutting a paved or brick sidewalk in the public right-of-way must remove snow or ice from that sidewalk, any ADA curb ramps, bulb outs, and from driveway aprons that must be crossed for pedestrian travel.

• From Nov. 1, 2025 through April 15, 2026, trailers, recreational vehicles, boats, or other stored items may not be parked or stored within the public right-of-way and may be towed or removed at the owner's expense. The absence of these vehicles items ensures open, accessible streets for emergency vehicles and traffic.. • During a forecast snow event of 2" or more, parking along emergency snow routes is also prohibited.

If you wish to report a sidewalk snow and/or ice violation, please wait until the snow has stopped falling for 24 hours or until the countdown clock on the City website expires. Find the clock and more information about the city’s snow code at www.helenamt.gov/know-the-code/.
