Helena Participating in Water Conservation Challenge
Published on April 01, 2026
HELENA, Mont. – For the fourth consecutive year, the City of Helena is asking residents to take a pledge to reduce pollution and commit to water conservation practices. The City is participating in the National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation, which is led by The Wyland Foundation. Residents can support the initiative by visiting mywaterpledge.com from April 1-30 and take an online pledge.
The water conservation challenge rewards participation by providing prizes for Cities that have the highest percentage of residents take the pledge. Individuals are also automatically entered to win additional prizes. The City of Helena will compete against other cities in the 30,000-99,999-population category. Last year, Helena finished No. 1 for Montana cities, and 100th nationally, for its population category.
This year’s prizes include $3,000 towards home utility bills. One elementary school in each of the winning Cities will also receive 100 pairs of Zenni Remakes sunglasses, which reduce damage to eyes from blue light exposure.
The annual challenge is a non-profit national community service campaign started over ten years ago by a handful of mayors looking for alternative ways to engage their residents about the water challenges facing the United States.
“I am proud to support the Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation and reaffirm our commitment to responsible stewardship of our natural resources,” said Helena Mayor Emily Dean. “By using water wisely and planning thoughtfully for dry years, we can strengthen Helena’s long-term resilience while ensuring a reliable water future for generations to come.”
Last year, residents from over 2,000 cities across the U.S. pledged to reduce their annual consumption of water by over one billion gallons.
The foundation also has a Water Footprint calculator, which provides a visual understanding of a household’s water consumption. The tool can be found at https://mywaterpledge.com/water-footprint-calculator/.
The National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation is presented by the Wyland Foundation, with support from the Toro Company, Zenni, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and National League of Cities.
