9-1-1 Communication Center Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I text information to 9-1-1?

Yes!  Currently the 9-1-1 Communication Center does accept Text-2-911.  Typing "911" as the recipient of the text message allows the message to be delivered to the Communication Center.

When I call to report a crime or suspicion activity do I have to leave my name?

The 911 Communication Center does take anonymous complaints, but it's preferable to have an identifiable complainant.  This gives law enforcement the ability to seek out more information during an investigation.  Traditionally first-hand witnesses or complainants play a crucial role in the prosecution of crimes.

Why can't I call 9-1-1, even if its not an emergency?

The Communication Center has limited telephone lines dedicated to receiving 9-1-1 calls.  If the 9-1-1 lines are utilized to process non-emergent request, it could mean we'd miss a true emergency or hinder a response to an emergency.  In 2018, the Communication Center received over 26,000 calls.
