A portion of Front Street in Helena is closed due to the flash flood.

HELENA, Mont. – A portion of Front Street in Helena is closed, as of Wednesday (July 6) afternoon, due to expanding damage from the flash flood event this past weekend. The initial closure only impacted the northbound lane on Front Street, between 14th and 15th streets. On Thursday (July 7), both lanes will be closed while City staff further assess the damage. The full extent of damage to this section of street may not be known for several weeks.

Both lanes of Front Street are also expected to be closed July 11-14 as the streets crew begins asphalt removal.

City staff has been assessing damage around town since the event and was closely monitoring Front Street near the Great Northern Town Center due to visible asphalt damage. Soil underneath the asphalt has continued to settle, causing greater damage to the street.

Currently, Front Street is the only roadway that has been identified with extensive damage. Several areas of town have been covered with landscaping rocks and rocks from the mountains. Street crews are busy cleaning streets, but residents should expect the clean up to take several weeks.
