Parks and Open Lands
The city of Helena Department of Parks and Recreation oversees seven divisions including Parks and Open Lands, Recreation, Open Lands, Weed Control, Tree Maintenance, Aquatics, and Bill Roberts Golf Course. Hundreds of volunteers assist the department staff working in various capacities to provide quality facilities and programs to enrich the lives of others. These are designed and developed so that people of all ages, abilities, and income levels have the opportunity to participate in excellent recreational activities.
Facilities at a Glance:
Bill Roberts Golf Course: A beautiful 18-hole public golf course, 6600 yards long from the long tees. This well-maintained course features contoured greens, many sand bunkers and water hazards, and outstanding views of the mountains in the background including the Sleeping Giant to the north and Mount Helena City Park and the Elkhorns to the south. It is a full-service golf course with clubhouse and pro shop and is the best golfing value in the Helena area.
Kindrick-Legion Field: Home of the Helena Brewers, a Milwaukee Brewer single A farm club, as well as the American Legion Helena Senators and Reps. The field boasts an old-fashioned grandstand with all of the usual baseball game amenities including a spectacular view of Mount Helena City Park and Big Sky sunsets.
Open Lands System: Includes over 1800 acres of natural undeveloped parkland. The system spans from Mount Helena on the city’s west side east to Mount Ascension and beyond. It is a favorite of hikers, mountain bikers, and nature enthusiasts. It connects with the Helena National Forest to the south of the Helena city limits.
Historic Last Chance Gulch Mall: Stretches from Sixth Avenue south to Pioneer/Heritage Park near the Lewis and Clark Library. The richly landscaped outdoor pedestrian mall is a favorite for tourists wanting to learn of the history of the area as well as the site for many festivals and special events.
Memorial Park: Located along historic Last Chance Gulch, the facilities include: a 50-meter heated outdoor swimming pool and waterpark, bandshell with outdoor stage, outdoor ice skating rink and warming house, large accessible playground, picnic facilities, open field areas, basketball court, and veterans memorials. The park is also the site of many trees planted in memory of Helena residents.
Sports Complexes: Helena major recreational sports parks include Batch Park next to Bill Roberts Golf Course (4 softball fields & concession area), Siebel Fields (soccer), Ryan Park near the Lewis and Clark Fairgrounds (13 youth baseball fields & concession area), Northwest Park across from Capital High School (softball and soccer), and Centennial Park (multi sports fields and softball fields). The Siebel Fields complex near the Helena airport has approximately 12 soccer fields.
Overall, the Helena Parks and Recreation system includes more than 2140 acres of developed and undeveloped parkland, 30 parks including bike/pedestrian trails, a 50-meter outdoor swimming pool and waterpark, one spray park, a public golf course, three tennis sites, a skateboard park, four outdoor skating rinks, and more.
